Alone time

Do you guys ever eat lunch at a cafe or a restaurant, alone? How about dinner?

Not that long ago, this would be frightening. And super unpleasant. And awkward.

( for me )

But a few years ago I had an amazing brunch all by myself in Cleveland.

To be fair, I didn’t plan it.

I missed my flight home & I was hungry. LOL & to be 100% accurate—I slept through my flight.

So I tried to make the best out of a shitty situation.

I went downstairs to Urban Farmer ( I highly recommend it! ), sat down, alone—and had the most amazing brunch. I even learned how to make a Bloody Mary ( they had a DIY Bloody Mary bar )

& I actually enjoyed it.

I didn’t feel awkward. And trust me, this was VERY unusual for me. Normally I’d avoid sitting alone at all cost.

But instead, I ordered my favorite ( Eggs Benedict ), whipped out my notebook ( I went upstairs to get it—I was staying at Westin ) and used the time to “blog” in my notebook.

It felt amazing.

If eating alone at a restaurant scares you, try it.

Overcoming that fear felt so liberating, and while I’m not likely to make a reservation for one anytime soon, knowing I can sit down at my favorite restaurant and enjoy the experience all by myself ( because I’ve already done it ) feels weirdly freeing.

Which brings me to the topic of alone time…

If you asked me two years ago if I enjoy alone time, I’d probably laugh & tell you no… I’m actually 100% sure of it. And I’d tell you I’d much rather spend that time with someone else.

Wake up call ⇢ I love running. Alone.

Because it gives me time to disconnect—& reconnect, with myself.

Because I’m not trying to keep up with someone else’s pace and I’m just focusing on myself and the run.

I finally see how important it is. I benefit from the time I spend alone—& so do my relationships.

If we don’t spend time with ourselves how can we get to know ourselves? How can we stay in-tune with who we are and what matters to us?

I don’t know about you… But these things doesn’t just come to me.

I have to put in the effort & I have to tune out the noise to hear myself think.

For me, alone time is usually spent running outside, reading a book in bed, or jotting down my goals & priorities, & creating a game plan.

Realistically, alone time doesn’t have be eating alone in a public place.

It can be whatever YOU want it to be—whatever allows you to connect with yourself.

There’s nothing selfish or weird in doing that—it’s healthy & productive.

What do you guys think?

Do you carve out time to be alone? Would love to hear!

Bita

Mugs that say nice things

HI GUYS!

I’ve been working on a morning and nighttime routine for some time now ( probably over a year ) and I haven’t quite nailed it yet. LOL.

But something I’ve been really enjoying is starting my day with a small bite ( ideally 1-2 hard boiled eggs ) and hot coffee with coconut creamer—& ending it with peppermint tea.

So we go through our mugs pretty fast.

When I was putting together this round-up I came across these adorable mugs that say “love is love” all around the rim—I love them!

So I started looking for more mugs that say positive or flattering ( ‘babe‘ haha! ) messages & found these.

I think it’s fun because it helps start & end your day on a good note. You know? So here they are…

Because why not take a compliment from your mug? ; )

I love this because it has a “no excuses” kind of vibe. & btw, it’s on sale right now!

How cute is this? I’d much rather be sipping tea from a cup that says “happy” than a cup that says “I hate Mondays” LOL, that’s just me…

YES!! Love is love is love all the way! Love this message & the mug itself is super cute, too.

Have you guys seen any other mugs you love? Link to them below?

Also, what are your thoughts on morning / bedtime routines?

I’m always fascinated by what people do right when they wake up & before they go to bed. Would love to hear about your morning / bedtime routine if you have one.

Chat soon!

Bita

Audrey Chaney on home design, building a business, and healthy habits

[ Audrey & her cutie pup, Ebi ( PC ) ]

HI GUYS!

I love collaborating and sharing knowledge, so when I came across Audrey Chaney and her company, Botanica Specialty Rentals, I instantly reached out to introduce myself and get to know her.

We jumped on a call shortly after and instantly clicked!

It was such a fun, natural conversation.

I was so impressed and inspired by her design sense, her launch and growth of her own company, and her overall outlook on life I HAD to have her on the blog.

I’m super excited to introduce you to Audrey!

Let’s dive in…

HI AUDREY! Please introduce yourself:

Hi there!  I’m Audrey with Botanica Specialty Rentals. I’ve been in the design-world for over 15 years and have had Botanica for over 10 years now. I absolutely love running and operating a business within the creative field!

Can you tell us more about your company, Botanica Specialty Rentals?

We specialize in providing unique and one-of-a-kind rentals for weddings and events. From tabletop to lounge furniture and interesting decor items, we have a wide array of fun items to infuse some serious style into your next event.

[ Gorgeous Moroccan poofs! ( PC ) ]

I ABSOLUTELY love your design style! How would you describe it to us?

Thank you!  My style is eclectic; I enjoy pairing items that aesthetically compliment each other. I love that our inventory makes spaces interesting and creates curiosity. Whether your next event is infused from styles of rustic nature, ballroom elegance, city industrial, vineyard romantic or eclectic boho, we have so many fun pieces to use!

How has your style developed over time?

I was the child who moved her furniture around in her room, changed out her decor and painted her walls. I believe in developing your eye-for-design through practice, study and implementation. I’ve found the more I analyze my work and see what can be improved—whether that be a photo I may have stylized or seeing what gaps there are in our inventory, I am always trying to improve and expand what I can offer.

LET’S CHAT ABOUT DESIGNING A HOME…

How can someone communicate their personal style through their home? How should they get started? What are some easy tips & tricks you recommend?

The first step is to identify what you are drawn to.

Is there a particular style or feel you are trying to accomplish? Knowing this first is quite important in all of the other factors you will decide upon moving forward.

Secondly, what items are you working with?

Maybe you have a piece of furniture that has been handed down to you. How will you utilize this? Maybe the room is planned out from that one piece and built around it.

I recommend keeping your space functional so that it is easy to use for yourself and whomever you live with. You want the space to be a place you’ll enjoy spending time in.

Quick fixes and ways to liven up a room would include:

  • A fresh coat of paint
  • Repainting a furniture piece within the space
  • A new rug
  • Pillows and blankets are a great and inexpensive way to brighten up a space and add a new feel instantaneously
  • De-cluttering and removing items or hiding items rarely used can help make a space feel more open and airy

What if someone doesn’t know what their style is or they’re all over the place… How can they hone in on it?

I suggest keeping things simple if you are just getting started.

There are so many great resources such as Pinterest and home design blogs. Study and see what you like and try to re-create a style you see for a coffee table for instance.

So, as you know… My boyfriend & I moved into our first place together semi-recently. What’s your #1 tip for making a new space feel more home-y?

My recommendation would be to add a few plants into the space.

The green vibes bring the outdoors in and it’s something that is often overlooked, but makes a big impact on a space. I love plants!!

I also love adding personal touches, whether it be fun coffee table books that reflect your personality or cozy blankets and pillows that make your space inviting and a place where your friends and family will want to come hangout and enjoy a glass of wine. I’m all about entertaining… That’s what makes a house a home!

What about for making the most out of your space?

Functionality and how you will use the space is always a topic that shouldn’t be overlooked.

You can have a picture perfect room, but if it doesn’t work for your needs, it’s useless.

It’s important to keep this in mind when selecting and designing your room layout, furniture, and finishing touches. After all, you’ll be living and using these spaces everyday!

You mentioned you’re a “plant nerd”… Let’s get nerdy. What plants do you recommend for inside the home & why? ( I absolutely LOVE plants – indoor & outdoor! )

Great question!

An easy rule of thumb for a “non-green-thumb” would be : Select plants with thicker, dark leaves.

Some of my favorite, easy to care for indoor plants are: Pothos plants, Dracaena, Ponytail palms and succulents are all great choices. If you have indoor pets, be sure you don’t select any poisonous plants. Most plants are noted at your home garden store if they are poisonous.

How do you figure out what to put up on the walls? Is this a weird question? LOL! Any tips here?

Great question! It depends on your style; generally, for larger walls, I prefer a larger print or piece of artwork as it makes a bold statement. Too many items on your walls can make a space feel cluttered, so make sure you keep things simple when it comes to dressing up your walls.

[ Love the colors in the tablescape! ( PC ) ]

[ Similar peacock chair ( PC ) ]

What are some of your favorite places for getting home décor & furniture?

If you’re looking to shop retail and aren’t feeling like a seasoned designer, I suggest a design retailer like West Elm or World Market. You can rely on pieces that coordinate well together based on their store displays and staffing. If you’re more advanced, you can piece together items from many sources. I love a good bargain, so I love going to flea markets, shopping at discount stores, and shopping online.

OKAY, LET’S GET A LITTLE MORE PERSONAL…

It sounds like you’re an early riser ( I LOVE that! ) Do you have any tips for waking up early? We want to hear allllll of them! ; )

Haha, yes! Getting to bed early is super important for me.

I love a routine and schedule and I personally need 8 hours of sleep to function optimally. I’ve heard limiting your caffeine ( though I don’t drink much ) to no later than the afternoon will also help your quality of sleep. I start my day off with a workout, and I’ve found that it’s much easier for me to get going in the morning if I’ve laid out my workout clothes the night before. It leaves me little time to search for socks and clothes to throw on and get straight to the gym. I’ll admit, it’s not always easy!

What do your mornings usually look like?

I get in a workout first thing, then shower and prep for work, eat breakfast and head to the office. I like to look at my schedule the night before and fine tune any timing and time blocks I have set for the following day so that I am ready to work and get things done when I get to work.

Since you love to run, are there any marathons or races you recommend?

I haven’t ran in any marathons, and I wouldn’t rule that out of ever accomplishing, but for now, I run shorter distances. : ) There are a lot of cool “themed” marathons that sound like they would be a blast!

What’s your favorite book? Or a book you read recently & LOVED?

My favorite book is The Alchemist. Though I normally read a lot of non-fiction, this book is a parable and I love the teachings within the story. I think I’ve listened to this on tape about 7 or so times, lol.

Favorite healthy recipe?

I love brussel sprouts!

Drink of choice?

Water with lemon essential oil. This is always so refreshing!

LET’S CHAT BUSINESS…

What inspired you to start your own business?

I was inspired to start my own business from my passion for design and flowers.

What’s been your biggest challenge with your business thus far and how’d you overcome it?

Growing the business and taking into consideration a framework and a system to have the business run with processes without my own involvement has been very challenging. Having a team you trust and can get the job done is so essential. Transitioning from working alone to teaching a team and providing the resources has been a great challenge, but an immeasurable necessity to get to where the business is now.

If you could give someone one tip before starting their own business, what would it be?

Be sure you are prepared to work harder than you ever have, face challenges like you’ve never faced and create something you can call your own.

Podcasts I’m loving right now

HI GUYS!

Switching gears from the other day—I want to share some of my favorite podcasts with you.

These are podcasts I’ve been listening to for months now & am still obsessed with!

Full disclosure… I discovered Tony Robbins’ podcast about a month ago. But before that I was constantly listening to his YouTube videos—so there’s that ; ) I’m really glad he has a podcast—he’s so good!

Here’s a quick blurb about each podcast & why I enjoy it so much:

  • WHAT IT IS: Shopify Masters provides the knowledge and inspiration you need to build, launch and grow a profitable online store. Join host Felix Thea each week as he interviews successful ecommerce entrepreneurs and unpacks how they’re building businesses that allow them to live the life they want.”
  • WHY I LOVE IT: I love learning about ecommerce and how these brands built their online businesses. Also, the host of the podcast, Felix, asks really great questions so I get a lot info & great insight from each episode. He’s an awesome interviewer!

  • WHAT IT IS: “‘Why live an ordinary life, when you can live an extraordinary one?’ Tony Robbins, the #1 Life and Business Strategist, has helped over 50 million people from 100 countries create real and lasting change in their lives. In this podcast, he shares proven strategies and tactics so you, too, can achieve massive results in your business, relationships, health and finances. In addition to excerpts from his signature events and other exclusive, never-before-released audio content, Tony and his team also conduct deeply insightful interviews with the most prominent masterminds and experts on the global stage”
  • WHY I LOVE IT: I love the way I feel after listening to Tony Robbins—I feel motivated, determined and so much more energized, and I LOVE learning about his strategies! He does a really great job communicating them in a constructive, positive way.

  • WHAT IT IS: “On each episode, Nasty Gal founder and author of #Girlboss Sophia Amoruso interviews world-class girlbosses who have made their mark in creative, cultural, and business ventures to extract solid advice from the lessons they’ve learned along the way.”
  • WHY I LOVE IT: I love hearing about the guests’ first job. This is a question Sophia asks every guest in the beginning of the episode & it’s always super interesting to hear. I also enjoy hearing their story about how they got to where they are professionally, and their Girlboss Moment. I love the overall vibe that Sophia brings to the podcast and the conversations she has with the guests. The guests are awesome! ( Heads up, Girlboss Radio is “on hiatus” until March since they’re working on the Girlboss Rally )

  • WHAT IT IS: “The Art of Charm Podcast is where self-motivated guys and gals, just like you, come to learn from a diverse mix of experienced mentors, including the world’s best professional and academic minds, scientists, relationship experts, entrepreneurs, bestselling authors, and other badasses.”
  • WHY I LOVE IT: I like the variety of topics on the podcast. I also love that it’s focused on growth, and that a lot of the content is backed by science and psychology.

I usually listen to podcasts when I’m driving or while I’m doing something routine… For example: doing dishes, cleaning the house, folding laundry, showering, doing my makeup, straightening or curling my hair, doing my nails, walking Minty, stretching, cooking, etc… You get it : )

Since doing dishes, cooking & showering are all pretty loud, I connect my phone’s bluetooth to our Amazon Tap so I can play the podcast louder & hear it more clearly—I love Amazon Tap for music too! It’s really good!

Okay, spill… What are your favorite podcasts?

It’s okay to get political.

[ This little boy’s ball says “BE KIND TO ALL” ]

I don’t even know where to start…

But I’ll start with what I saw today.

I went to SFO to protest against Trump’s unlawful, ill-advised ban against refugees and citizens of 7 primarily Muslim countries: Iraq, Syria, Iran ( where my family & I are from ), Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

[ The lawyers were working behind this post ]

This is what I saw:

+ I saw a mother protesting with her kids—her toddler by her side and her baby in a stroller—and each of them had a poster. The baby’s poster was the size of a flashcard.

+  I saw HUGE crowds on both the 2nd and 3rd floor of International Arrival with people of all ages, and religious and cultural backgrounds—not just Middle Easterns—protesting against the ban. It was beautiful.

+ I saw so many signs that said “Jews for Muslims”.

+ I saw protestors wave the American flag and the Iranian lion flag.

+ I saw tons of lawyers helping… They had name tag stickers on their shirts that said “Lawyer”. There was an area on the 2nd floor next to the protestors where they were working to get the people released—many of them had their laptops out ( they looked very busy ).

[ One of the many areas where people donated food and drinks for protestors ]

+ I saw multiple areas with donated food and water for protestors. People would go around the crowd passing out water bottles to anyone who was thirsty.

+ I saw LOVE and UNITY.

That’s also what I heard and felt.

The crowds were loud and passionate and peaceful and loving all at the same time.

There were drums and music, and even a Chinese dragon dance.

We chanted:

+ “We are people, we are not illegal.”
+ “The people united will never be divided.”
+ “Let the families out. Let the lawyers in.”
+ “All the walls have got to go from Palestine to Mexico.”
+ “No ban, no wall.”
+ “You come for one, you come for all.”
+ “Tell me what America looks like. This is what America looks like!”

& “Move Trump. Get out the way. Get out the way, Trump. Get out the way.”

[ Artist, Naomi Alessandra, created these incredible signs to bring awareness to who this ban is actually keeping out. Read about Samira’s story here & follow her on Twitter for updates ]

[ Award-winning Iranian filmmaker, Asghar Farhadi, who delivered this beautiful acceptance speech at the 2012 Oscars wrote this statement about the ban ]

If you don’t know who these people are who are being detained at airports or on the way to the U.S. I encourage you to learn about them with me.

Learn about Samira Asgari, a research scientist who was moving from Switzerland to Boston to start her post-doctoral fellowship at a Harvard Medical School laboratory. She was stopped from boarding her connecting flight into Boston.

Learn about Marzieh Moosavizadeh, a 75-year-old grandmother who’s held a green card since 1997 ( 21 years! ) and visits her family in the U.S. almost every year. She was detained at LAX.

Learn about the 5-year-old boy—an AMERICAN CITIZEN and Maryland resident—who was detained for 4 hours at Dulles airport.

Learn about these people and their stories so when someone says this is a ban against terrorists you can say, confidently:

No, this is NOT a ban against terrorists. This is a ban against Muslims. This is a ban against humanity.

If you’ve read articles about other people who are being wrongfully detained or are unable to travel to the U.S. with their green cards or visas, please link to those articles below. Or if you’d like to share your personal story with the community, please share your experience with us below. We want to hear from you.

Last week, on Saturday, January 21, I participated in the Women’s March in San Francisco and that too was incredible.

It was my first march and it meant so much to me for so many different reasons.

It’s amazing to see all these important issues… Women’s rights ( which are human rights! ), LGBTQ rights, immigration, education, the prison system, the Black Lives Matter movement, the environment and so much more… All come together into one, united, powerful movement.

If you’re feeling down… If you’re angry… If you feel helpless… Go to a peaceful protest. Your presence makes a difference.

You CAN make a difference.

Whether you choose to write, protest ( I highly recommend it! ), create art, sing, donate your time and / or skills—you’re making a difference.

Thank you to everyone who stood with me and continues to stand for what’s right.

My ONE Goal for 2017

[ Mug | Pretty embroidery on this maxi dress ]

[ Monogram mug | metal strawsweater ]

Can you believe it’s almost 2017? GAH!

I can’t believe it!

I stumbled across this video by Tony Robbins the other day and I feel like it’s spot on with how to create happiness and reach your New Year’s Resolutions / goals ( so obviously I have to share it with you. It’s too good not to! )

Basically, Tony says it comes down to creating PROGRESS by creating new HABITS.

And for me, specifically, it also comes down to FOCUS.

I’m really ( REALLY! ) terrible at following the principle of “The ONE Thing“. But I believe in it… & it’s something I’m working on.

So this year, I’m focusing on ONE goal and ONE habit ⇢ fitness, working out every morning.

If you want to have an awesome year ( & why wouldn’t you? ), DEFINITELY check out this video—think about one area in your life you’d like to make better & what habit will help you get there… Help you make progress. I think you’ll love the video!

Tony shares his 4 steps for making progress towards the end of the video so I made a little cheat-sheet for us ( below ) to refer back to / pin.

If you guys go through Tony’s process ( or even if you don’t ) I’d LOVE to hear what your 2017 goals are. LOL I’m totally serious… I’ve asked / talked about 2017 goals with my boyfriend & his sister so many times now, it’s kind of become a joke.

But, I REALLY want to know. I love this stuff! So shoot me an email ( bita@joyfetti.com ), comment below or on Instagram, or tweet me… However you’d like. I’d love to hear from you! : )

[ monogram mug | metal straw | white bralette | navy sweater ]

Switching gears for a moment, I want to give a shout out to tobi.com for sending me this super comfy, huge ( just the way I wanted, LOL ) navy sweater & this maxi dress ( both pictured above ).

I’ve been snuggled up in this sweater all day & probably will be for a good chunk of winter. I’m definitely packing it for our next Tahoe trip!

I feel like baggy sweaters are a staple during winter. Don’t you think? Especially solids. I love solids!

Okay… I’m going to bed so I can wake up early-ish ( LOL ) and go to the gym in the morning & run. Wish me luck ; )

HAPPY NEW YEARS!

I hope you have a safe & amazing NYE!

How to Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

know-how-you-can-have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too_always-be-baking_by-bita-ehsanipour_joyfetti-com

I’ve always been into quotes and sayings—and understanding what they mean. So a few years ago ( for about a year or two—pretty crazy! ) I was fixated on a really common saying that “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” And I just kept thinking… “What does that mean? Why can’t you have your cake and eat it too?”

If you’re wondering, a quick Google search will tell you it means “if you eat your cake you won’t have it any more. The point is that if you eat your cake right now you won’t have it to eat later.”

I don’t believe that… LOL.

So I kept thinking about it. And I realized, you CAN—you CAN have your cake and eat it too. You just have to always be baking.

Meaning, you have to always be producing. And when you think about it it makes a lot of sense.

For example:

How can you have money and spend it too? Well, you have to constantly be making money. ( Or at least, making more money than you spend. )

“Know how you can have your cake and eat it too? Always be baking” – Bita Ehsanipour

I wanted to share it with you guys because it’s been on my mind a lot lately.

Right now, I think about it as I need to always be producing content. That’s something I’ve been focusing on right now: producing more content for JOYFETTI & JOY Consulting Co.

So, what do you think about the expression “You can’t have your cake & eat it too”? Do you believe it? Or do you agree with my thought that you CAN have your cake & eat it too. You just have to always be baking! ; ) Would love to hear!

xx,
Bita

HI GUYS!!

I didn’t get very festive for Halloween ( I did put out 3 white pumpkins next to the TV. LOL! Does that count? You saw them on Snap. ) BUT—if we lived in an area that got trick-or-treaters, I’d FOR SURE put out A TEAL PUMPKIN.

Here’s why:

FARE, which stands for Food Allergy Research & Education, is making Halloween more exciting & FUN for kids with food allergies through their “Teal Pumpkin Project“.

They explain:

“Every child should be able to experience the joy and tradition of trick-or-treating on Halloween. But kids with food allergies are often left out of the fun, since most candy is off limits.

FARE’s Teal Pumpkin Project helps make sure all children will come home on Halloween night with something they can enjoy. It just takes one simple act: offering non-food treats, such as glow sticks or small toys, as an alternative to candy.

Last year, households from all 50 states and 14 countries participated. This is a worldwide movement to create a safer, happier Halloween for all trick-or-treaters.”

To participate:

Some of my favorite items to have on hand are bubbles ( YES, PLEASE! ), mini slinkies ( such a throwback, I love it! ), bouncy balls, temporary tattoos & fun stickers! Basically all the things we wanted in our goody bags when we were little, minus the candy.

Okay, SO! If you participate ( I hope you do! ) share a photo of your teal pumpkin on social & tag @JOYFETTI & @foodallergy so we can see!!

This year ( like I do most years, HA! ) we’re taking my niece & nephew trick-or-treating and then checking out the neighborhood where I grew up—the houses go ALL OUT there! I love it! We’ll do a little walky walky & a little sippy sippy ; ) I’ll share it on Snapchat so be sure to come along! ( username ⇢ JOYFETTI )

Happy ( almost ) Halloween!!!

Sara Kashlan of Kash in on Health on Living Healthy & Creating a Life You Love

sara-kashlan-on-joyfetti-com_hat

sara-kashlan-on-joyfetti-com_doing-aerial-yoga

HI GUYS!!

I’m SO sorry I’ve been so quiet on the blog lately. It took me a few weeks to realign my priorities and declutter my life ( I’m making that a thing if it isn’t already ; ) ) Even though The ONE Thing is one of my FAVORITE books, I’m really, REALLY bad at practicing “The ONE Thing”. But I’m working on it. Anyways, it feels really good to be back.

This blog post, has been a long time coming…

You know when you meet someone & you instantly click?

I feel like that’s what happened when I “met” Sara, the founder of Kash in on Health—an awesome health & wellness blog. Except, we didn’t meet in person… We found each other on Instagram ( LOL ) So 2016, right?

For those who don’t know Sara ( yet ), I want to introduce you.

She’s authentic, personable, sweet, AND she’s on her way to becoming a Registered Dietician. SO COOL!

I love that she’s into eating well and living healthy, but also makes a point to treat herself.

SO, without further ado, here’s a fun Q&A to get you acquainted:

HI SARA!! Introduce yourself:

Hiiiiii! My name is Sara Kashlan. Avocado lover + part time blogger for Kash in on Health from Orange County, California. I’m currently in graduate school to become a registered dietitian.

What advice do you have for readers who are feeling unfilled or like something’s missing?

First things first—I’ve definitely been there. After college, I worked as a social media manager for 3 years and was literally going through a pre-quarter life crisis ( more details about that here ). Long story short, I wasn’t happy or satisfied with what I was doing and I needed a change. I knew I loved nutrition but the thought of going back to school to take a bunch of science pre-requisites was terrifying. I ended up taking the leap and while it wasn’t a smooth ride, it was by far the best decision I’ve made yet.

If you’re feeling unfulfilled, I HIGHLY suggest taking some ‘you’ time to learn more about yourself. Travel, read a new book, try a new exercise, tap into your creative side, start a side business or blog… The possibilities are endless. With time, things will slowly start to come together.

How did you figure out that going back to school and becoming an RD was the right move for you?

I’m a big believer in doing what you love. You’re going to be working for the rest of your life, so why not do something that makes you happy? I personally knew that if I continued in the career I was in, nothing was really going to change and I would remain unfulfilled. With that being said, I’ve always loved health & wellness and after going to a yoga retreat in Tulum, Mexico, I realized I wanted to make a career out of it. Took me a while to figure it out, but hey, better late than never! The first step I took was getting Plant Based Certified from Cornel University. After that, I realized I wanted to dig deeper into nutrition so I decided the grad school RD route was the way to go. I also started my health blog, Kash in on Health, as a way to share my passion for health with the internet world.

What’s your life like now that you’ve taken this leap?

It’s prettyyy busy but I wouldn’t want to have it any other way. I’m currently doing rotations in Los Angeles where I shadow dietitians in different fields & that’s been super fascinating! I also work part time as a nutrition consultant and do blogging on the side for fun : )

You’ve tried several lifestyle “diets”… Raw, vegan, vegetarian, low carb / high fat, you name it… What’s your take on all of them?

Honestly, diets don’t work. I had to experiment and try them for myself to really figure that out. Overall, it’s hard to stick with them and you end up depriving yourself from one thing and compensating it for something else. Trying a variety of fad diets made me realize that eating healthy is a way of life. It’s important to eat a variety of healthy carbs, fats, and proteins. & It’s okay to treat yourself every once in a while. We’re all human & it’s better to enjoy yourself and move on rather than stress over it. I’m really into psychology and mindful eating so I’m a big believer in the mind / body connection. For example, if you beat yourself up over eating something that’s considered not “healthy”, I truly believe it slows down your metabolism. Instead, enjoy that treat and continue with your healthy lifestyle.

How would you explain your “diet” currently?

I really don’t like to label myself but if I had to I’d probably say I follow a mostly plant-based diet. For me, that means the majority of my diet consists of fruits & vegetables, with some eggs and fish. I eat chicken & meat occasionally.

What’s your #1 tip for living a healthy & active lifestyle long-term?

Start your mornings with a big glass of water. Every. Single. Day. Ideally warm water ( bonus if you add lemon to it! ) It totally sets the tone for the entire day and clears your mind first thing in the morning. So many of us mistake thirst for hunger so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day! It’s incredible for your skin, too!

What motivates you to eat healthy & stay active?

For me, health & fitness make me happy. You know how some people get hangry? Well, I literally get like that when I feel myself slacking off in my meals or workouts.

What’s one of the most surprising or interesting things you learned while in your program?

Hmmmm. That’s a tough one.  A lot of my clients are mind blown when I tell them that one teaspoon of salt is the limit for sodium intake in a day, which is about 2300mg. A teaspoon of salt seems like nothing, but it really goes a long way! Plus it can make you bloated and isn’t so great for the abs!

Where should readers go if they want to find credible information about nutrition online? What resources do you recommend?

NutritionFacts.org is a good one!!

sara-kashlan-on-joyfetti-com_cauliflower-buffalo-wings_yum

What’s your favorite plant-based ( vegan? ) recipe? We have to know! ; )

Another tough question! I loveeee me some cauliflower buffalo wings with some Majestic Garlic Spread ( the spread is raw / vegan and can be purchased at Whole Foods ). THE BEST! Now I’m hungry…

 Favorite ( healthy ) snack?

Celery or apples with peanut butter… Hands down.

Cocktail of choice?

I’m really not much of a drinker but I do love me some sparkling water with lemon!

Guilty pleasure? ( mine’s chocolate! HA! )

Oh boy. I have a big sweet tooth which is why I love to bake my own healthy desserts. But if I had to choose one guilty pleasure it would have to be chocolate chip cookies. The soft, gooey, chocolate chips melt-in-your-mouth kind. Mmmm…

What do your mornings usually look like?

Right now I wake up between 5:30 and 6 a.m., drink 1-2 BIG glasses of water, my peppermint tea and then eat breakfast. After that I check my emails and head to work.

What’s your weekly workout schedule?

My schedule is kind of all over the place right now so I don’t really have a set routine ( in the process of fixing that though! ) Lately, I’ve been working out in the afternoons. In terms of specific workouts, I like to change it up between circuit training, pilates, spin, stairs and yoga. When I don’t have time to take a class I love going outside and doing stairs or sprints. Ideally, I try to workout 5 days a week. On the weekends I love hiking.

What’s your must-have beauty item?

Tinted sunscreen / moisturizer for sureeee. Can’t live without it!

Favorite natural beauty product?

Right now I’m loving my ice face roller, haha! Does that count as a beauty product? It’s so refreshing and totally relaxes me! My skin looks so much brighter after ice rolling and makeup goes on better as well!

Favorite quote?

“The grass isn’t greener on the other side, it’s green where you water it.” I really, truly, 100% believe this.

What’s your favorite book? Or a book you read recently & LOVED?

The last book I read and loved was The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. The biggest lesson I got from it was to live a more simple life with less stuff / clutter. Another book I love is The 4 Hour Work Week. I haven’t had much time to read lately so I’ve been listening to a ton of podcasts instead!

Favorite podcasts?

The Art of Charm, #AskGaryVee Show, and TSC Ask Him & Her are my current faves!

Anything else you’d like to share with the JOYFETTI family? : )

I think that’s about it! Thanks so much for having me! If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to email me at sara@kashinonhealth.com.

Sunday Splash: Dominican Republic, Puppy Love & Our GIVEAWAY Winner!

Sunday Splash_Dominican Republic, Puppy Love & the GIVEAWAY Winner_Flight to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic_joyfetti.com

[ Our flight into Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. We arrived! ]

Hello, hello, hello—HAPPY SUNDAY!

How’s your day been?

Today was my first Sunday back from DR & it felt soooo good! I was so relaxed, so energized, & so not hungover, which was a really nice change from vacationing in DR. We stayed at a resort with swim-up bars in all the pools, soooo… As you can imagine, it was very easy to get drinks.

AND! … SUPER easy to get to the beach, which I loved. We had a view of the ocean every day at lunch ( it was so incredible ), and we could run back and forth from the pool to the ocean in less than a minute. It was AMAZING.

[ My FAVORITE⇢ the ocean—it was so gorgeous, so blue ( ombre blue! ) & super warm. ]

I’m putting together a “What to Pack for Punta Cana” post this week, so stay tuned for that.

&, side note—some of my friends asked me to share some makeup & skincare posts, so stay tuned for more of those in the next few weeks.

I really, really want to know what YOU ( yes, you! ) what to hear about, so please let me know… Comment below, email me ( bita@joyfetti.com ) or let me know on social. I want to hear from you. : )

So… Why was today so relaxing?

It’s all about how I started the day.

I got coffee with a few of my girl friends ( LOVEEE ) this morning, & it was SO nice to catch up with them, get a little caffeine buzz & walk Minty.

I feel like a little get-together with the girls is a MUST, right?! Like water… I need it to survive.

After a 3 hour ( LOL, that’s how I like ’em ) coffee date, I sat myself at the computer where I’ve been working for the past 5-6 hours ( not complaining, I love it—& I took breaks here & there. )

I poured myself a big glass of Kombucha—GT’s Guava Goddess—in a champagne flute, opened a bottle of Pellegrino ( LOL, getting wild ; ) ), put on some Cuban music, and lit a citrus candle.

I switched over to JOYFETTI Playlist — Carefree on Spotify a few hours ago to mix it up.

[ My go-to salad lately ⇢ organic arugula, goat cheese, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, + salt & pepper. So simple & so delicious. ]

The Guava Goddess in the champagne flute looks SO much like a Bellini, right!? I’m kind of into it…

I got a bottle of sauvignon blanc with notes of grapefruit earlier today, & it’s still chilling in the fridge. I just sipped on my Kombucha all day and pretended it was a Bellini. ; ) HAHA. Next time ⇢ definitely GT’s Guava Goddess + champ. YUM!

I had the BEST sauvignon blanc with notes of grapefruit last night, with dinner, so naturally, I picked up a similar bottle so I could have a liiittttle bit more. ; ) I don’t know the name of yesterday’s wine, but I’ll get it for you guys this week so you can try it out if you’d like. It was a-mazingggg.

Sunday Splash_Dominican Republic, Puppy Love & the GIVEAWAY Winner_Minty at the dog park_joyfetti.com

[ Minty found some shade & peace ( HA ) in a little tunnel at the dog park yesterday. Follow her on Instagram for more pics & vids. ]

This week was FULL of doggy play dates and visits to the dog park, which I LOVED! Minty‘s been warming up to dog parks, slowly but surely. She’s making progress, little by little.

I snapped all the fun from yesterday’s dog park, but since we went in the afternoon it’s not in my story anymore, I’m sorry! Follow us on SNAPCHAT so you don’t miss any of the fun. Username ⇢ JOYFETTI

In other news ⇢ we have a WINNER!! Jessica, ( @mommywithtwins7 on Instagram)—congratulations!

Thank you, everyone, who entered the healthy snacks giveaway on Instagram. Let me know… What do you want to see in our next giveaway?

Have a great Sunday night! : )
